Award joy for golfer Petts

FORMER Clacton junior James Petts has been awarded the ProSport Media 5-Star Professional Award for 2010, by the European Professional Golfers Association.

Petts started playing in 1975 at the age of 11, after being introduced to the club by his father, Brian Petts.

Under the initial guidance of Andy Wenn, the then assistant professional at Frinton Golf Club, Petts made a solid start to his golfing life and this was enhanced by the arrival at Clacton of their newly-appointed head professional Stuart Levermore.

Petts was club champion in 1982, 1984 and again in 1986.

He also won the club’s junior championship four times.

Petts was selected to play for Essex in the under-16 boys’ level and also in the under-18 juniors level and the under-21 colts.

In 1983, at the age of 19, he played six matches for Essex’s seniors.

Petts was tenth in the English Boys Strokeplay Championship in 1981 and played for Essex in the English County Finals.

The following year he was a member of the Clacton Golf Club juniors team that made a clean sweep of all the county’s junior trophies.

Petts won the Essex Boys Championship, while Petts and Andy Hull won the Essex Boys Team Championship.

To crown it all, Petts, Andy Wenn, Sean Carr, Alistair Strutt and John Wood won the Essex Youth Shield.

The awards presentation was held at the La Serena Golf Resort in Spain.
