Clacton raced into the quarter-finals of golf’s Thornton Cup with an emphatic 10-5 win over Braintree.
In the morning foursomes, they got off to a flying start thanks to wins by Ben Herbert and partner Matt Baker (3&1), Jiwan Rai and Andy Hobbs (2&1), Danny Clark and Peter Hewett (3&2) and Stewart Locke and Nick Starling (2&1).
It meant they took a four-point lead into the afternoon singles, needing a further four points to win the match.
In the early stages it looked like Braintree were going to stage a fightback, with both Clark and Hobbs losing.
However, the revival did not last long with Nick Tedder-Ward winning 4&3, Herbert 7&5, Hewett 6&4 and Baker 2&1.
Clacton now have a quarter-final date at Five Lakes on Sunday, July 26.
Meanwhile, 142 players took part in Clacton’s July Medal.
In division one (handicaps under 12.5), first place went to Mark Grover, with a gross 74 playing off a handicap of nine (nett 65). Second was Mike Gurry (75-8-67) and third Jason Ranson (78-11-67).
In division two (handicaps 13-28), the high-handicappers ruled the day.
First was Scott Price (82-20-62), second Ron Marsham (92-28-64) and third Tony Stevens (91-26-65).

He won on countback from second-placed Ray Fage (85-14-71). In third place, having a good season, was John Richmond (89-16-73).
