CLACTON Golf Club's men played their counterparts from Colchester for the much-coveted Matebele Challenge Bowl.

Colchester were the current holders.

After an afternoon of many ups and downs, a superb display by the home side saw Clacton retake the trophy.

Jubilant team captain for the day, club vice-captain Martin Penalver, thanked all his team for their great efforts.

Elsewhere, Clacton's ladies played for the Centenary Trophy.

The format is bogey and Ann Wright took the honours with a plus five.

Second place, with plus three, went to Hoon Locke and in third place, with plus two, was Christine Crossfield.

Clacton's past and present lady captains played the sixth set of the competition. Winning this round with 38 points was Sonja Strutt.

Current ladies' captain Brenda Lord was second with 35 points.

Clacton's juniors played for the September Medal.

A strong field saw some superb results by many of the juniors.

Wilf Elliott emerged as the clear winner, scoring a nett 63.

Three shots behind, with another great score, was Cameron Curtiss, with a nett 66.

In third place with a nett 68 was James Wright.

A full field saw some very competitive nett returns but leading the way with a fine nett 66 was eventual winner Raye Fage.

Three shots behind and grabbing second spot on countback with a nett 69 was Malcolm Taylor.

In third spot, also with a nett 69, was Doug Nichols.
