THREE yachts from Walton and Frinton Yacht Club took part in the Felixstowe Regatta.

Blue Beeste, owned by Charlie Penfold and Martin Jenkins, and Crikey, belonging to Geoff Parker and friends, both X332s, competed in the main IRC class while Dabtoe, Nick Moulton's Sunfast 3200, competed in the Cruiser Handicap Class.

The race team working from the committee boat, Olive Bank, made the decision to hold the racing from an area near Stone Banks buoy.

In the Cruiser Class, Dabtoe only competed in the first race as this was the only one counting towards the Haven Series Cruiser Class division.

The Sunfast 3200 struggled a bit in the light conditions, having to use her asymmetric spinnaker for the running legs which was a disadvantage.

Dabtoe recorded a fifth place, leaving her fourth in the series.

In the IRC fleet, race one of the Regatta was also race five of the Haven Series.

A long course around the buoys and navigation marks was set.

Blue Beeste was first out of the start line, with clear wind from the pin end of the line.

Crikey was in close company, along with the lovely new Beneteau Fast 40, aptly-named Forty Love.

With her two main competitors fighting for superiority, Blue Beeste was able to sail into a commanding and unchallenged lead.

The race lasted three hours and, by the finish, Blue Beeste was more than five minutes ahead of Crikey, who took second place from Forty Love.

Race two counted only for the Regatta and an Olympic course with two laps was set.

The start line was biased to the committee boat end and the favoured position was just under the committee boat.

Blue Beeste picked this spot and vigorously defended it, forcing Forty Love to abort her start, tack away and start late.

This allowed Blue Beeste to sail off into another clear romp round the short course, winning by more than four minutes.

Sunday saw the conditions becoming even more Mediterranean, with high temperatures, clear blue skies and light winds.

Race three was also Haven Series race six, so the course was a longer one around the buoys and navigation marks.

The start was a close affair but Crikey and Forty Love were able to cross clear ahead of Blue Beeste and cover tacked her all the way to the first mark.

Crikey rounded with a narrow lead over Forty Love, with Blue Beeste a couple of boat lengths adrift.

With Forty Love jockeying with Crikey for the lead, Blue Beeste was able to time a climb to windward and, in a nerve-jangling reach for the second mark, able to slip past Crikey to lead her round Stone Banks buoy.

Having established a lead and clear wind, Blue Beeste was able to sail on to win the race by a comfortable three minutes, winning the Regatta with a perfect score of three firsts.

Blue Beeste has also made pretty certain of retaining her title as Haven Series champion with results of five firsts and a second from the six races sailed.

With four races to be sailed and seven to count, one top-five finish will give the Walton boat her sixth consecutive victory in this prestigious series.

The next Haven Series Racing is on the weekend of September 8 and 9.
