KIRBY Tennis Club chalked up an unexpected 3-1 victory at Harlow to progress into the semi-finals of the Essex Summer Cup.

Played indoors with temperatures soaring into the 90s, the team of Curtis Austin, John Howe, Sam Watling and David Austin ensured Kirby progressed.

The first-round matches were shared with Austin and Austin winning 6-3, 6-0 and Howe and Watling narrowly losing 6-4, 3-6, 7-10.

Not to be beaten, Kirby then won both second-round matches.

The Austins won in a third-set tie-break 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, with Howe and Watling winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 to seal a 3-1 victory.

A home semi-final awaits against Raleigh or The Grove Chelmsford.

Meanwhile, the Kirby pairing of Joy Norman and Barbara Ager had a great day at Frinton Tennis Club.

They won the first in a series of ladies' doubles matchplay events.
