FRINTON Cricket Club skipper Kyran Young sung the praises of lower-order batting trio Miguel Machado, Dominic Stockdale and Pulina Tharanga after his side’s winning draw with Great Witchingham.

The sides met in a Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League contest at Ashlyns Road on Saturday.

Frinton were wobbling at 97 for four but eventually managed a very competitive total of 315 for seven, thanks to the exploits of Machado (94 not out), Stockdale (64) and Tharanga (45).

Mervyn Westfield then took four wickets but Witchingham dug deep and held on for a draw, finishing on 211 for five. Frinton took 15 points.

“We batted well at the top of the innings and again lower down the order,” said Young.

“There was a bit of a self-combustion just before lunch when we lost a couple of cheap wickets.

“Witchingham probably thought they were in the box seat at that point but those partnerships lower down got us right back in the game.

“It’s pleasing to see these boys doing well and runs down the order are so crucial.

“It’s not just about the opening batsmen.

“They helped us turn the game round and I was delighted to get over 300 runs because the par score on our wicket was probably 250 to 260.”

Frinton had made a solid start thanks to opener Michael Griggs (38), Young (23) and Joe Fowler (21).

But after losing Westfield (nine) and Comber (six), it was left to the lower-order batsmen to get them to their excellent score.

Westfield then took four wickets, with the other falling to Tharanga.
