ALL good things must come to an end and so it is with this football season.

FC Clacton signed off their year with three home games in the last week of the season, with one victory and two defeats to show for our efforts.

In truth, that is exactly what the league table told us we should get.

The defeats were to Histon and Stanway Rovers, both teams in the top eight of the league, and the victory was over Haverhill Borough, who arrived in 19th place but demoralised by the news that they are set to be demoted after failing to come to a groundshare agreement with Haverhill Rovers.

While there was no real fizz or bang to end the season, it’s still one that we can look back on with some satisfaction.

After the horror show of last year, we have garnered 51 points from 46 games and had we not thrown away ten or 12 more points by giving up late equalisers it could have been more.

Kieron (Shelley) and Mike (Wallace) set an initial target of a point a game and when he came in Tommy (Austin) set a target of 50 points.

We have reached both of those targets, despite a few wobbles along the way.

We’ve never been in contention for relegation and we’ve shown that the squad we have can mix it at this level.

The challenge now is to improve for next year.

That is through players developing, one or two coming back fitter and sharper and through bringing in a few new recruits to improve the quality and depth of the squad.

I’m sure Tommy and Adrian (Webster) are already mulling these things over and planning for the summer.

The other question is what league we will be in next season, with an FA restructure meaning the leagues could be shaken up.

Will we leave the Eastern Counties League, our home for the last 50 years, and move to the Essex Senior League, or will it be as you were come July?

But they are questions for the summer.

For now, we look forward to the club’s awards night when the under-18s, reserves, women’s and first team awards will be presented.

Anyone wishing to join us is welcome so please come along to the clubhouse on Friday evening for a 7.30pm start.

Who will win the awards?

Well, we’ll find out on Friday night!
