CLACTON Golf Club made a winning start to their Thornton Cup campaign as they defeated Burnham-on-Crouch 11-4.

Their team consisted of Danny Clark, Chay Pratt, Jiwan Rai, Joshua Bethell, Wilf Elliott, Keith Buxton, Jake Wells, Matt Baker, Jamie Read, Nick Tedder-Ward and Tom Heffer.

Meanwhile, Clacton held their Gage Cup match.

This pits the club's seniors against the ladies and, on this occasion, the result was a 6-6 draw.

The course played well and the match took place in lovely sunny conditions.

In their first league match in the Jubilee Cup, Clacton’s men had a narrow victory at home to last year's winners, Stoke by Nayland.

Halving the singles 3-3, it was left to club captain Alfie Smith and Tommy Lee and Dave Lee and Nathan Spencer to seal the victory in the pairs. The final result was 5-4.

The match was managed on the day by vice-captain Martin Penalver.

Clacton's seniors won the Cyril Rand Memorial Trophy against Harwich and Dovercourt, prevailing 4½-3½.

The club's seniors also played in a match against Colne Valley and drew 6-6.
