TWENTY women turned out to compete for the prestigious Holloway Rose Bowl at Frinton Golf Club.

This is a medal competition with a handicap limit of 35.

Although the weather was not terribly conducive, Diane Gerrard took home the silverware with a nett score of 77.

Mary Johnson was second with 83 nett and Marie Ellis was just behind her in third with 84.

The traditional Tendring Gents v The Ship golfing societies match was played on Saturday.

It was a close one, but the Gents eventually won 5/4.

On Friday evening, Sotheby’s golf and other sports specialist David Neech visited Frinton.

His job is to travel the country valuing golf memorabilia.

He gave an antiques roadshow-style evaluation of items members brought in. Then, after dinner, he took the participants on a journey through golf club and ball history and reminiscences from his golfing life.

He always played as an amateur, for many years for Herts and Kent, and played 12 times for England.

He qualified for the Open in 1962 and 1963 but missed the cut by one stroke both times.

Neech also scouts young talent for the English Golf Union and his most successful find to date is Justin Rose.
