JASON Lloyd is the Clacton and District League's handicap singles champion for 2018.
In the tournament final, the experience of Lloyd (+1) overcame the youthful talent of 12-year-old Ollie Rampton (-1) to take the Gordon Denton Trophy for the first time.
Lloyd took command of the first set, helped by edges and nets, and raced into an 8-4 lead in the second.
Rampton battled back to take it 11-9 and, for a brief moment, the force was with him as he built up a 9-7 lead in the third.
However, the determined Lloyd dug in and took the set 11-9 before running away with the fourth 11-2.
It was a well-deserved success, just 12 months after finishing runner-up in the same tournament.
Lloyd stayed unbeaten on the day, defeating Derek Willis, Abhi Peshkar and Barry Allen in his group and John Barton in the quarter-final, before beating 12-year-old Liam Harris in a compelling semi-final.
Harris (+1) put on a display of uninhibited hitting with Lloyd (-6) often forced to retrieve from the back of the court.
However, Lloyd emerged victorious 11-7 in the fifth after a contest in doubt to the last.
Runner-up Rampton, in his first Clacton tournament, also went unbeaten in his group of Pawel Szemro, Mark Ratcliffe and Sandie Krelle, while his semi-final against 16-year-old Ethan Lloyd was another crackerjack.
In a scratch-match, the advantage swayed back and forth, with both players engaging in attacking rallies away from the table.
But Rampton edged it 11-7 in the fifth, thus denying Ethan the opportunity to join dad Jason in the final.
It had been a hard day Lloyd junior.
In round one (on -15) he had been given a stern test by 14-year-old Harley Wood (+2) before winning 11-9 in the decider and (on +1) edging past Adam Cuthbert (-1) 11-8 in the fifth in an entertaining quarter-final.
An honourable mention goes to beaten semi-finalist Liam Harris, who topped his group and was involved in a David-and-Goliath quarter-final (on +3) against Mel Rampton (-13), eventually winning a marathon five-setter.
