IN almost perfect conditions, 100 competitors took part in Clacton Golf Club's annual Club Championship.

After the first 18 holes, Jiwan Rai, with a gross 72, had a two-stroke lead going into the afternoon session.

Three players were two shots behind - 2016 champion Nick Tedder-Ward, Billy Leonard and Gary Lee, all with gross 74s.

The afternoon heat beat down and it looked like it took its toll.

Rai, Tedder-Ward and Leonard all faded but playing through with a gross 71, to add to his morning 74, Lee stood tall to claim the coveted club champion title with a combined gross score of 145.

There was some consolation for Leonard, who took the gold division title.

There was also success for Dave Reid (silver), Barry Joyce (bronze one) and Perry Bettis (bronze two).

Meanwhile, Clacton's junior Youth Shield team travelled to Colchester to play their quarter-final against Abridge.

Sadly, they were unable to progress, going down 3-2.

The team of captain Katy Yates, Jake Wells, Josh Bethell, Wilf Elliott and Harvey Bell were bitterly disappointed and had high hopes of making the final for the second year in a row. However, it was not to be.

Abridge fielded a very strong team and the Clacton side were unable to break them down.

Clacton's ladies' Harris Bowl team travelled to Playgolf Colchester for their final league game of this season.

Having won all three of their previous matches, a win on this tricky course would have put them through to the quarter-final stage.

The team of Yates, Faye Trigg, Denise Pink, Fiona Cope and team captain Sonja Strutt all battled well against very strong opponents but lost 3-2.

Playgolf, however, have another match this week, which will determine whether Clacton have made it through to the quarters or finished as runners-up.
