FC CLACTON manager Kieron Shelley plans to start trimming and shaping his squad next week.

The Seasiders have begun their pre-season training schedule, with players from last season's squad taking part in the opening sessions - one of which was held on the beach.

Shelley then invited some new faces - possible recruits - to this week's get-togethers.

He plans to cast his eye over everyone together before making decisions on his squad for next season, which he hopes to have in place before the club's opening friendly at Stanway Rovers on July 1.

"We've had a few sessions so far and they've gone really well," said the Clacton boss, who has discovered that his side will start their Thurlow Nunn League premier division campaign at home to Walsham-le-Willows on July 29.

"I wanted to get the players back early so we could really work on their fitness.

"We started with players from last season's squad and then we've had a few new faces over this week.

"I'm going to look at them all together before making any decisions, but I certainly hope to have my squad of 16 to 18 in place for the Stanway friendly.

"That's my plan but I'm not going to name players yet.

"It's too early and we need to see how things pan out.

"What I will say is that I'm really encouraged by the way preparations have gone.

"It's been good getting the boys back together and we've had some excellent sessions.

"We've worked them hard but also had a bit of fun, including a few games down on the beach.

"It's important they enjoy it and that we continue creating a real team spirit among the group. They've all had smiles on their faces.

"Things are looking good and I'm not concerned in any way, shape or form.

"I'm also really looking forward to working with Mike Wallace and Tom Austin, as part of our new-look management team."

Clacton have fixed up seven friendlies, starting with the trip to Kem Izzet's Stanway on July 1.

They then go to Gas Recreation on July 4 before a match against Weeley Athletic on July 8, to be played at the Tendring Enterprise Collge, in Jaywick Lane.

Next up they go to Cornard United on July 11 before home games against Witham Town, Brightlingsea Regent and Harwich and Parkeston on July 15, 17 and 22 respectively.

Clacton begin their league campaign at home to Walsham the following Staurday and then make the short trip to Brantham Athletic on Tuesday, August 1.

More league fixtures will be released after the upcoming FA Cup draw.

Meanwhile, the draw for the Tolleshunt D'Arcy Memorial Cup took place on Monday.

The Seasiders have received a bye in the first round and go straight into the quarter-finals, where they meet Thurlow Nunn League newcomers Little Oakley.

If successful against the Acorns, they will visit the winners of the tie involving

Wivenhoe Town against Halstead Town or Hullbridge Sports.

Meanwhile, Holland FC will start their Thurlow Nunn League division one campaign at March Town United on Saturday, July 29.

They then host Halstead Town on Tuesday, August 1.
