FRINTON'S golfers staged a dramatic comeback to win their opening match in this year's Leslie Wood competition.

It proved an action-packed contest against Brentwood.

President Malcolm Withycombe and club captain David Joshua led a good group of members to support captain Rob Long’s team.

In the morning foursomes, Liam Wilson and Ross McAuley gave Frinton a convincing and impressive win.

Sadly, though, it was the only one for their team so the score at lunchtime was 4-1 to Brentwood.

Frinton clearly had a mountain to climb.

Morning winners Wilson and McAuley were out first and won their matches, both 2/1.

The news spread around the course that a comeback was looking almost possible.

Then the tide turned and the wind came up, all to the home team’s advantage. Wins swiftly followed for Chris Hemingway (3/1), Simon Partridge (3/2), Alan Morrison (3/2) and Bill Burns (5/4).

Paul Mutton, at all-square playing 15, hit the shot of the day to 20 feet from the 14th fairway.

Bob Newton and Mutton won their matches one-up and 3/1 respectively and the final score was 9-6 to Frinton.

Meanwhile, Frinton's ladies played a stableford on their day.

As usual for April, the cold north wind made the going more difficult.

However, Caroline Gard and Joan Withycombe were in fine form, both having scores of 37.

Gard was named as the winner on countback.

Two ladies finished with 35, but Ginny Richardson was awarded third place on countback, just ahead of Julia Walshaw.

In the Friday men’s stableford competition, David Moore was the winner with a seriously good score of 42 points.

Kevin Smith was in second place with 39 and Brian Stokes was awarded third place on countback with 38, ahead of Murray Northover and Steve Mitchell.

Fifty-four gents and ladies entered the monthly stableford event open to all Havers Course members.

Tony Nicholas outdid himself, winning with 43 points.

Three men scored 42, with Stuart Grimwade claiming second place on countback, ahead of John Harding and Colin Shaw.
