FRINTON Lawn Tennis and Squash Club have announced the departure of head coach Chris Harris.

Harris, who has been an integral part of the club for over two decades, is moving on to new and exciting projects, taking up different challenges along with dedicating more time to his family.

In his heyday, Harris, who was county champion on numerous occasions and represented Essex in all age groups from junior to veteran, was second in the UK to former Wimbledon contender Jeremy Bates.

He was a formidable player on the pro-circuit and played many top-ranked players during an outstanding career.

"I'm very sad to be leaving the club after 24 years, but would like to thank all the members for their support over the years and count myself lucky to have met so many nice people and forged so many great friendships along the way," said Harris.

"I've seen many youngsters blossom into very good players and hope they continue to play the wonderful sport of tennis, something I'm passionate about and love so much."

Harris is due to leave this week and members old and new have wished him well in his future career endeavours.

Tributes have come in from members near and far afield, recognising his contribution to the tennis and coaching scenes at the Holland Road club.

Lifelong friend and ex-coach Nick Crown said: "Chris is a precise coach and any player taught by him will have a sound foundation to their tennis ability and a love for the game instilled in them.

"As a man he is honest and straight, a gentleman and I'm proud to call him my friend.”

Current member Pauline McGrath added: "Chris has made so many people the players they are today.

"His coaching was always good fun and the players enjoyed their tennis lessons. "He will be missed by all of us and we wish him the very best of luck for the future."

Child protégé Alex Brown, who is now in the coaching team at David Lloyd, Colchester, said: "I couldn't think of a better boss, mentor and tennis coach. "Chris worked with me since I was five years old and made me the tennis player and coach that I am today.

"I owe so much to him and I wish him well."

Harris won the Lawn Tennis Association junior event at Frinton three times and was ranked second in Britain in the under-14 category.

He secured a scholarship to Tyler University in Texas and helped them win the national college title, with Harris being ranked number one college player in the USA.

Later on Harris played in Frinton's Colchester and District League men’s team that first won the Premier League.

He also enjoyed great success playing in the National League for Frinton.
