KIND-HEARTED football followers have dipped into their own pockets to support both their team and charity.

Brightlingsea Regent fans have clubbed together to purchase a new away kit for their side, who are currently flying high in the Ryman League.

And they have offered the usual sponsor logo on the front of the shirt to mental health charity MIND.

The kit is being officially launched at Saturday’s crucial division north match at home to leaders Maldon and Tiptree, although it was worn for the first time in last weekend’s 2-1 victory at Great Wakering Rovers.

It will next be donned when the R’s visit Thamesmead Town on February 11.

“It’s a great gesture by dozen or so of our hardcore supporters,” said Regent's Gavin Aplin, who works as part of a commercial team with Phil Calver.

“A few of them decided to put a syndicate together, in order to create revenue for the club and also to raise awareness of an important charity.

“MIND is a national organisation but the regional branch is independent, in terms of fund-raising.

“It also has strong links with the town, because of its connections with our annual music and arts festival, the Brightlingsea WinterFest.

“The supporters have been really generous. Everyone loved the idea and we’re very much looking forward to seeing the team wear it on their travels.” The retro Adidas kit comprises blue tops and shorts and white socks, with a V-neck.

Meanwhile, Brightlingsea had a great day on Saturday, moving up to second in Ryman League division north and taking full advantage of defeats for fellow high-fliers Maldon and Thurrock.

James Webster’s men took a significant step with a 2-1 win at struggling Wakering.

Goals from Tom Richardson and Aaron Condon gave Regent a 2-0 lead.

Although Jake Gordon got the hosts back in the game with ten minutes to go, Brightlingsea held on for the three points to move above Thurrock, who lost at Brentwood Town.

They are now second, behind Maldon, who slipped up at home to Bowers and Pitsea.

They have also played two games less than the leaders ahead of Saturday’s meeting against the Jammers at North Road.

“It wasn’t a vintage performance at the weekend but we ground out another three points, making us unbeaten for January,” said Regent boss Webster.

"Now we’re really looking forward to Saturday’s big game against Maldon.”
