BRIGHTLINGSEA Regent head coach Angelo Harrop is relishing the chance to cut his teeth at Ryman League level.

The former Stanway Rovers manager joined just after Christmas following his departure from the Thurlow Nunn League side.

He was quickly snapped up by Regent boss James Webster and appointed in a coaching role at North Road.

And he says that so far it has been both an enjoyable experience and a learning curve.

"Everyone has been so welcoming," said the former midfielder, who graced the likes of Needham Market and Leiston.

"It's such a family club and I can see why they've done so well in recent years.

"I always knew they were ambitious but probably didn't realise how ambitious until joining.

"I'm really enjoying it and feel as though I'm going to gain so much from this experience.

"Sometimes it's good to step away from what you're used to and that's what I've done by leaving a Thurlow Nunn League club to join one in the Ryman League.

"I'm learning a lot and it's a challenge, which is good for my development.

"There's a difference between the two leagues and at this level you have to be more tactically aware.

"It's great for me to have a look at other teams and how they're playing, without the pressure of being manager, and hopefully I can bring something a bit different to the table.

"I'm really grateful for the chance because the club have backed me and given me a licence to prove myself and cut my teeth at this level."

Promotion-chasing Regent have won eight of their last ten league games, including their last three since Harrop's arrival.

They defeated Heybridge Swifts on New Year's Eve, in his first game in the dug-out, before seeing off Wroxham and Romford.

"We've been so pleased with the way things have gone in the last three games," said Harrop.

"What's great is that we haven't really hit top form, yet we're still winning games pretty comfortably.

"It's no exaggeration to say we could have won 10-1 at Romford on Saturday.

"We had so many chances but still ran out clear winners, without being fantastic.

"There's loads more to come and if we're still in the mix by the end of this busy month, it could be an exciting end to the season.

"James (Webster) has done a great job here.

"He's brought some cracking individuals to the club and they're all the right type of character.

"There are no arrogant players of big-time Charlies.

"Everyone is focused on the same goal and singing from the same hymn sheet.

"There are also some great young players here and much of the credit has to go to the Colne Football Academy.

"Harry McDonald is one example and I'd say he's the best young player in the area, with so much ability and potential."

Third-placed Regent face a tricky trip to Bowers and Pitsea tonight.

Their hosts have lost their last two but had won the previous nine Ryman League matches.

"Bowers have dipped in form a bit but that could make them a dangerous animal, because they'll be keen to fight back," added Harrop.

"Having said that, I believe it's all about us.

"If we play well, we'll win the game and I feel confident about that."
