CLACTON Golf Club captain Nick Smith welcomed Colchester counterpart Vic Pomphrett and his team for the 2016 Matabele Bowl.

It turned out to be a memorable encounter and, on this occasion, the hosts were the winners by six points to two.

A highlight was a first hole-in-one by Colchester member Paul Smith, who achieved his ace at Clacton's 165-yard second hole using a six iron and a white ball.

Results: Smith and Ronnie Miller won 4&2 against Pomphrett and Keith Newnham, Alf Smith and Bradley Broughton won 2&1 against Roger Robertson and Mike Kettle, Lee Hale and Fred Allerton lost one-down to Tom Rothery and Adam Harper, Peter Wright and Alan Hearn halved with Stewart Ness and Dennis Brown, John Moore and Craig Green won 5&3 against Jeff Johnson and Dave Humberstone, Peter Smith and Steve Scott halved with Tim Moriati and Russel Storey, Keith Sampson and Simon Smith won 3&2 against Stewart Watson and Paul Smith, Darrin Starling and Jiwan Rai won 5&4 against John Redden and Mick Potter.

Meanwhile, Clacton welcomed 80 golfers from as far away as Ely for their annual 36-hole Battle of Britain Open Championship, which was this year sponsored by Palmer and Partners Estate and Letting Agents.

In the morning matches for the Blenheim Trophy, the winners were Mahendra Gurung (PlayGolf Colchester) and Jiwan Rai (Clacton), with 43 points.

In the afternoon matches, playing for the Bob Close Cup, the winners were Anthony Grosch (Ely City) and Paul Oakley (Ely City), with 42 points.

The pair with the best aggregate score for the 36-hole competition and the winners of the Battle of Britain Spitfire Trophy were Kyle Green (Clacton) and Ben Usedon (Clacton), with 83 points.

In second place were Mark James (Clacton) and Perry Bettis (Clacton), with 77 points, and in third place were A Lay (Rushmere) and J King (Ipswich), with 76 points.

Clacton's seniors' section played their September Medal and the winning score of 76-10-66 was returned by Paul Euston.

In second place was Maurice Tarrant, with 89-21-68, and in third was Ted Connors, with 97-28-69.

Clacton played the mixed pairs Hurst Salver and the winners were Julia and Peter Hewett, with 44 points.

In second were Sue and Russell Carter, with 41 points, and in third were Karen and Steve Scott, with 39.

Clacton member Jamie Reed travelled to Romford to play in the Romford Trophy, for category one golfers.

The winner was Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club) returning 71 and 68 for a good winning score of 139.

In second was Brandon Meeds (Chelmsford GC) with 73-70 = 143, while Reed did well against stiff competition, returning 74-77 = 151 for 24th place.

Clacton's juniors played for the Vertigen Trophy.

Finding the course to his liking was George Fuller, who returned a stableford points score of 48.

In second was junior captain Josh Bethell, with 39 points, and in third was Katy Yates, with 35.
