WALTON and Frinton Yacht Club's dinghy racers have had mixed fortunes.

The last of the Summer Series races was scheduled for Sunday morning.

However, with winds reaching 27 knots, it was decided to cancel it.

The outcome of this is that the series was decided by counting all four races sailed with no discard.

Martin Jenkins, in his Phantom, won fleet one and Tony Blake won fleet two, in his Jewel.

The Evening Series race on Thursday fared a lot better.

A lovely warm evening with a light breeze greeted the nine dinghies that launched in the evening sunshine.

Race officer Alec Moss set a long course with the option of shortening if the wind died.

Fleet two was first away on a slightly shorter course and it was Robin Cooper, being crewed by popular Solo sailor Tim Oxley, sailing a Jewel, that led from the start.

Although Harry Triffitt got past the the traditional Jewel during the race, it was Cooper who finished first and won the race.

Fleet one started five minutes after the slower boats and Jenkins had the best of the start and stretched away from Nick Wood, in his Phantom, and the rest of the chasing pack.

Jenkins crossed the line a good distance ahead of his close rivals but the Laser of James Oxley and the Solo of John Sewell, although being ten minutes behind, looked like they may well be close on corrected time.

After the results were worked out, the Solo of Sewell was first, Jenkin's Phantom was second and Oxley's Laser third.

The next race in the Evening Series is on Friday, July 29.

On Sunday the club are hosting the popular pier race and expecting a good turnout for the 1.30pm start.
