WIVENHOE Town have re-signed former favourite Ben Parkin from FC Clacton.

The striker joined the Seasiders last summer, following the Dragons' relegation into Thurlow Nunn League division one.

Now he is back at the Maple Tree Cars Stadium and looking forward to playing his part in another successful season for Mo Osman's side, who bounced back at the first attempt last term.

"It's great to have Ben back," said the Wivenhoe boss.

"He's big and strong and knows where the goal is.

"He also gives us another option up front, alongside Ray (Turner) and Adam (Hampson).

"However, he's also versatile because he can play in defence and that's a great thing to have in his armoury.

"The supporters know him too and he's an infectious character - a fantastic person to have in the dressing room.

"I don't think we've seen the best of him yet and I'm really pleased to have him back."

Reece Keating has parted company with the club but, aside from that, the rest of last season's squad are staying put for a crack at premier division football.

Osman, who hinted that he might like to add more defensive cover, says it was never his intention to make wholesale changes because he feels the existing players who performed so well last season deserve their chance.

"It's one in and one out so far," he said.

"Reece is the only one who won't be about next season.

"He doesn't want to commit to this level of football and is going to look for something a bit lower down.

"Aside from that, I didn't want to make big changes and didn't see the need.

"There's enough competition to push each other on to where we want to get to.

"It was very important to get everyone re-signed and never my plan to go out and get lots of players in.

"It's not just about loyalty - they're good players and there's such a good team spirit.

"Having performed so well to get the team promoted, I believe they deserve a chance in the premier division and, although we have to be realistic, we'll go out with the belief we can achieve something."

The Wivenhoe squad had their first pre-season training session last Wednesday.

They are now preparing for their opening friendly, against Ryman League neighbours Brightlingsea Regent on Friday night.

The match is being played at Strangers Corner, in Brightlingsea, rather than at North Road.

Osman says the mood in the camp is very good and that everyone is looking forward to the season ahead.

"A few of the boys are away on holiday but it was good to get the group together again," he said.

"There was a positive vibe and I'm really pleased that all bar one of last season's squad have re-signed."
