FRINTON suffered a crushing nine-wicket defeat in their Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League match at heavyweights and reigning champions Swardeston.

The visitors' innings took a predictable course after losing the toss and being asked to bat.

With Michael Griggs unavailable, Tom Benn opened but was quickly back in the pavilion - soon to be joined by the rest of the top order.

Two suicidal run-outs contributed to Frinton's woe, with only Mervyn Westfield (37) and Matt Foakes (12) reaching double figures.

Swardeston's 17-year-old seamer, Tom Oxley, finished with fantastic figures of three wickets for seven runs as the visitors could only manage 74 all out.

The hosts only lost one wicket in reply, with a second wicket - and a single match point - being denied due to a dropped catch.

The hosts only needed 12 overs to reach their target and claim the only result in the league that day.

To add insult to injury, the heavens opened shortly after the game finished.

Frinton travel to Sudbury on Saturday, knowing a huge improvement will be needed.
