NEW FC Clacton boss Tom Gooder is “hugely excited” and relishing the challenge of his first managerial role.

The 29-year-old was appointed as David Coyle’s successor on Friday morning.

Seasiders co-owners Stephen Andrews and David Ballard described him as a “perfect fit”, in terms of working with the club’s predominantly young squad.

And Gooder himself says he is ready for the challenge ahead and looking forward to pre-season training getting under way on June 21.

“I can’t wait and am very thankful for this opportunity,” he said.

“Clacton are a club I’ve followed for many years and I like the ethos of wanting a team of young, local players.

“I know that’s the owners’ dream.

“The town has a big catchment area and in many ways the club are pretty unique, compared to others.

“There’s also a plethora of young talent at the club, given the success of the club’s under-18s and under-21s.

“Given the right nurturing, I think they can flourish and that’s an exciting prospect.”

Gooder has already spoken to the majority of his squad and is hoping there won’t be any more departures, following Aaron Condon and Kevin Coyle’s exits.

He says the club have already been in conversation with several potential new targets, although is reluctant to name names at this point.

“I back myself as a coach and a tactician and now I’m relishing the chance to manage a side, of building and preparing a team,” he said.

“I’m very aware of what David achieved last season ([guiding the club to their highest-ever position of 10th tenth)].

“It’s going to be incredibly hard to replicate that, especially now we’ve lost Aaron [(Condon)] and Kevin [(Coyle)]. “I’m not going to start making big statements about kicking on and finishing eighth, ninth or higher.

“However, in terms of mentality and performance, I want to continue the good work of last season. I hope we can continue that momentum and build on what David achieved.”

Before being appointed as manager, Gooder was given the seal of approval by David Coyle – a good friend and someone he refers to as a “mentor” – and former Clacton captain, striker and assistant manager Sean Hillier.

The former Colchester Sixth Form student is a full-time football coach, with links to Chelsea’s academy and the Chelsea Football Foundation.
