WALTON and Frinton Yacht Club held the second race in their Summer Series.

Due to an early tide, the number of starters was down a bit but, in fleet one, the honours were going to be hotly-contested, with most of the front-runners present.

Race officer Andy Evans set a long and interesting course in the perfect conditions.

Fleet two was reduced to just four entries on the day but, with a challenging beat to get to the start area, just two started the race, including the Jewel of Tony Blake.

In fleet one, the battle between the Phantom of Martin Jenkins, the TOY of Glen Bacon and John Sewell's Solo has been interesting.

The TOY, having only a provisional handicap, has thrown up some challenges for the rest of the fleet.

At the start gun, the Phantom was quick off the line and headed for the bank of the river to sail the first leg in as little tide as possible.

The TOY stood further out, hoping for a wind veer and banking on the faster boat speed of more wind out in the river. The Solos, led by Sewell, followed the Phantom much closer to the bank.

The Phantom rounded the first mark with a good lead.

The TOY was more than a minute back and the Solos were holding their handicaps rounding behind the two leaders.

Jenkins went on to stretch his lead to a couple of minutes over the long course.

However, despite sailing immaculately, the Phantom was having a job holding the TOY off on the long leg across The Wade.

At the finish, Jenkins' Phantom did enough to win by just 20 seconds.

Bacon's TOY was a close second and Sewell led the Solos home for third.

The next race in the series is on Sunday, June 19.
