PETER Smith's 37 points proved the winning score as Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club`s older players, played for the Veteran`s Cup.

The cup was presented to Clacton by the Retail Fruit Trade Association in 1966 and this popular Gold Leaf event has been keenly contested ever since.

The 2016 winner was Smith, with second place going to Bob Gage with 36 points and in third place was Dave Holden with 35 points.

Clacton`s Juniors played for the Basil Morgan Trophy and the winner was James Wright, who returned a bogey score of plus 1.

In second place was Katy Yates, returning level and in third place was Sam Bruce with minus 4.

Robert Meekings' bogey score of plus 5 earned him victory in the Hospital Cup on countback from second-placed Keith Buxton, with third place going to Scott Smith with plus 4.

Clacton members played the Mid-Week Medal and top spot went to Brady Diplock with 82-12-70.

Second place went to Colin Ross with 79-8-71 on countback from third-placed Paul Kirk with 80-9-71and fourth-placed Paul Atkinson with 77-6-71.

Meanwhile, former Clacton junior Sam Teer has graduated from his golf studies at Birmingham University.

Teer has been studying at Birmingham and at the PGA's headquarters at the Belfry in Sutton Coldfield, while working in the golf shop at Clacton under head professional Michael Goodwin.

At his graduation ceremony, Teer received his degree certificate in Golf Studies, Sports Science and Business Retailing from former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallagher.

Also in attendance was Sandy Jones, chief executive of the PGA who welcomed the students to the ranks of the Professional Golfers Association.

Teer is now teaching and coaching at Clacton along with playing on the East Anglian PGA Tour.
