CLACTON Golf Club captain Nick Smith welcomed a Stoke-by-Nayland team led by Don Wiggins.

The sides met in their annual match, which is played home and away over two weeks.

On this occasion, Clacton won 5½-2½.

It means next week's return match is eagerly awaited.

Results: Nick Smith and Simon Smith lost 2&1 to Don Wiggins and Ian Thompson, Laurie Farrugia and Dave Gilbert halved with Jon Wiggins and Phil Stevenson, match organiser Terry Hewett and Alan Price won 3&2 against past captain Julian Lamb and Ian Smith, John Willson and Ray Fage won one-up against Dick Chambers and Bob Tokely, Brian Vasey and Gordon Pryke won 5&4 against Peter Garnett and Steve Clark, Andy Moore and Paul Otte lost 3&2 against Mick Isom and Dave Wilson, Martin Penalver and Steve Chignell won 2&1 against Graham Vendervord and Dave Wilie, Ian Neil and Keith Sampson won two-up against Eric Fisher and Neil Farmer.

Meanwhile, Clacton's seniors played their May Medal and the winner was John Richmond, with 87-14=73.

In second was Bob Black, with 87-13-74, and in third was Laurie Farrugia, with 89-13-76.

On a great Sunday morning for golf, 108 Clacton members turned out to play in the Centenary Salver.

The winner was the up-and-coming Andy Moore, returning a very good score of 83-16-67 for another handicap cut, and in second was Perry Richards, with 81-13-68.

In third place, excelling himself with a good steady round, was Andrew Snell, with 90-20-70.

Clacton's junior golfers played their May Medal and the winner was Wilf Elliott, with 87-12-71.

In second was Katy Yates, with 77-5-72, and in third was James Wright, with 114-35-79.

Playing in the Essex Ladies' Golf Union's Munro Shield second round, Clacton's team of Fiona Cope and Denise Pink were drawn against Stock-Brook Manor.

These foursomes match play matches are contested on neutral courses and this one was played at Colne Valley.

On a glorious day for golf, the Clacton ladies teed it up against their Stock-Brook opponents, who had included a gifted junior who is at university in the United States.

The Clacton ladies were duly impressed with her swing, driving length and accuracy.

After a shaky start and going four-down, the Clacton team rallied to get to the 16th only one down.

It became a tight match and even the support of Clacton caddies Di Kedge and Sonja Strutt, adding to the team effort, could not stop Clacton losing one-down.

Clacton's ladies held their Spring meeting and winning the four ball better ball matches were Jackie Bright and Anglia Barratt, with 33 stableford points.

In second place were Di Kedge and Janet Hiller, with 32 points, on countback from third-placed Sonja Strutt and Fiona Cope.

The best front nine winners were Heather Bradfield and Kath Sinnott, with 17 points, and the best back winners were Sue Gurry and Pat Cook, with 16.

The nearest the pin winner was Sue Carter, with a distance of 4.6m.
