FRINTON Cricket Club skipper Kyran Young believes he and his players can make a real statement by beating high-fliers Copdock and Old Ipswichian on Saturday.

The Ashlyns Road side posted their first Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League victory of 2016 in emphatic style last weekend - winning by seven wickets at Bury St Edmunds.

Now they hope to build on it against Copdock - but Young knows he and his players face a tough task against opposition that he believes could be in the running for the Premier League title.

"It was great to get our first win and now we're looking forward to a massive game against Copdock," he said.

"If Swardeston slip up, they're my tip to win the league.

"It's nice to go into such an important game in confident mood, though, and we know that if we play to our ability, we can cause them a lot of problems.

"Copdock are always a very good side.

"They've got depth and a presence that all teams would love to have.

"They're always up for it and always hard to beat, home or away.

"There's no doubting that it's going to be a huge test but if we could win it would make a real statement."

Young praised his side for a brilliant performance last weekend.

Dan Carter claimed the amazing bowling figures of eight for 51 while Zimbabwean David Brent (76) and Murray Commins (69) were the batting heroes at Victory Park.

The Australian has identified a winning "vibe and mentality" in the dressing room and says he is enjoying his new role as skipper, having inherited the captaincy from Mark Jones.

"I'm loving it and it's a great opportunity to work with the club's younger players, to try and aid their development," he said.

"The vibe and mentality in the dressing room is fantastic.

"The group gels so well.

"Everyone trains and plays hard and they want to be around the club.

"I'm honestly not worried about results at this stage of the season.

"It's about performances and if we get those right, the results will take care of themselves.

"We're taking it one game at a time but there's no reason why why we can't build on last season's success and have another great year."

Mervyn Westfield was unavailable for last week's game but is back in the fold for Saturday.

First, the former Essex man has been picked to play in today's match between the Premier League Representative side and Essex.

"It's a great opportunity for him to show what he's capable of," added Young.
