NEW signing Murray Commins wants to hit the ground running at Frinton Cricket Club.

The club’s new South African overseas star is poised to make his Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League debut in Saturday’s curtain-raiser at home to Sudbury.

He arrived in England last Wednesday and hopes to make an immediate impact for skipper Kyran Young’s side.

“I’m very excited,” said the top-order batsman.

“Frinton had a very good season last year (finishing as league runners-up) and we’ll be looking to do the same this time around - or even better.

“I’m looking forward to the first league game and hopefully we can get a win.

“It’s always good to start well and I’ll certainly do my best for the team.

“It’s good for confidence and if I could score a few runs it would give me something to build on throughout the season.

“I’ve heard most of the previous overseas players here have done a good job.

“They’ve had some very good ones down the years so that puts me under a bit of pressure, but I’ll be hoping to follow in their footsteps.”

Commins, 19, says his first impressions of Frinton are very good and that the Premier League is a similar standard to what he is used to back home in Cape Town.

“I’m settling in,” he said.

“I’ve been here a few times before for cricket and squash tours, but not for long.

“I’ve met everyone and they’re all nice guys.

“Everyone has been friendly and I’ve been very impressed.

“It’s a lovely ground and I’m feeling happy.

“I’ve got good first impressions.

“Frinton is a very different place to where I’m from.

“Cape Town is very big and busy, whereas this is a quiet little town.

“It’s going to take some getting used to, but I’m very excited about getting started.”

Commins had been playing his club cricket for Western Province, where he was captain at under-13 and under-15 level, and last year he played for the South African under-19 squad.

Dad John was an international cricketer while Commins junior, who can also play for Frinton's Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship side, is also a successful squash player, winning more than 40 tournaments since 2008.

He has been number one at under-13, under-16 and under-19 level in South Africa and last year he was the Western Province under-19 champion.

“I play a lot of squash and was good when I was a junior, being number two in the country,” he said.

“But it’s had to take a back seat for my cricket.”

Frinton finished as runners-up in their first season in the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League.

The second team begin their Two Counties Championship division one campaign at Haverhill on Saturday.
