FC CLACTON boss David Coyle believes it will be an “outstanding” achievement if top-scorer Aaron Condon can clock up a century of goals for the Seasiders.

The skipper took his overall club tally to 98 after netting twice in Saturday’s 4-2 defeat at home to Thurlow Nunn League champions-elect Norwich United.

It also took his season’s tally to 27 – two short of Sean Hillier’s club record of 29, set in the 2008/09 campaign.

Condon will be hoping to add to his tally – and maybe bring up three figures – in this weekend’s home premier division match against Thetford Town.

“It will be one hell of an achievement, to score 100 goals for a side that predominantly finishes in the bottom three or four,” said manager Coyle.

“He’s also a winger, rather than an out-and-out striker, who’s had to adapt to a different style of football this season.

“And he’s also been forced to miss a few games through suspension and being away on holiday.

“To reach a century of goals and get 30 this season would therefore be seriously impressive and an outstanding effort.

“Like ourselves, Thetford score goals but they also concede them – so I’m pretty sure it won’t be 0-0.

“Aaron will get opportunities but, more importantly, we’ll get opportunities to win the game.”

Coyle was left “gutted” by last week’s defeat by runaway leaders Norwich.

He said the high-flying visitors, who have applied for promotion, were “rattled” during the opening 20 minutes of the second half, at the Rush Green Bowl.

“I was gutted because we gift-wrapped all of Norwich’s goals,” said the Clacton boss.

“They didn’t have to work for any of them.

“At the other end we managed to score twice – no mean feat against a side that kept 29 clean sheets last season - but still managed to lose 4-2.

“It was so frustrating. I’m not saying we were brilliant or created loads of chances, but the boys worked very hard and rolled their sleeves up against a top side.

“Norwich were seriously rattled for a spell after half-time.”

Clacton will be without Karl Andrade (hip injury), Lee Townrow (suspended) and possibly Wayne Chapman (knee) against Thetford.

And Coyle admits team selection is going to be tricky between now and the end of the season.

“In terms of personnel, it’s going to be a real struggle,” he said.

“People are hanging on with little knocks but we’ll get a team out and hopefully one that plays with the same effort, energy and commitment as Saturday.”

Striker Andrade came off with at half-time against Norwich, having suffered his injury in the previous game at Stanway Rovers.

Townrow is suspended, having missed the previous two games through injury, while Chapman is struggling with a knee injury suffered during the Stanway game.
