TOMMY Jacobs is preparing for his professional boxing debut.

The 28-year-old middleweight, nicknamed Sweet T, is fighting at Bethnal Green’s iconic York Hall venue on Friday, March 11.

He will do battle with another debutant in Ryan “The Style” Lyall, from Perth, in Scotland.

The Harwich Boxing Club stalwart is confident it will go well – and sees it as the first step towards his ambition of winning world titles.

“I want to put our area on the map and get as many people to follow me as possible,” said Jacobs, a former pupil at St Osyth Road Primary School, in Clacton, Spring Meadow Primary School, in Harwich, and the Harwich School.

“Wiseguy Promotions, who are running the show, have already tipped me to be competing for titles in three or four fights’ time, due to my amateur pedigree.

“I’m the most successful amateur boxer Harwich Boxing Club has produced.

“As an amateur with in excess of 50 bouts, I’ve won four national titles and I was the first Harwich fighter in history to be a national champion.

“I was also the first Harwich boxer to represent England and captained the England team, which included the likes of current world champion Billy Joe Saunders.”

Jacobs, who works for Coyle Construction and recently moved from Clacton to Colchester, will be fighting out of Champions Gym, based at BKK Fighters, in Colchester.

He will be joined on the night by older brother Matt, a former British number two, and Paul Shaw, one of the founding coaches of Harwich Boxing Club.

“I’m certain I’ll win world titles and I’d love everyone locally to be part of that journey,” he added.

“It’ll be a tough start against Ryan, though.

“Unlike most people in their first fight, I’m not fighting a journeyman but another debutant and he’ll be bringing an army of support from Perth, in Scotland.

“He’s made the move across to professional boxing from kickboxing, in which he was both an amateur and professional world champion.”
