NEVER has a team played so badly and won 7-0.

So I quipped to the Gazette’s very own Matt Plummer after our victory at Newbury Forest in the previous round of the FA Vase.

Though I can hardly say “never has a side played so well and lost” about our tie at AFC Dunstable on Sunday, I think it’s fair to say we all left Creasey Park feeling rather hard done by.

In truth, the game was always going to be everything that the one at Newbury Forest was not.

Up against a good side in Dunstable, unbeaten and sitting top of their league, we knew the boys would have to perform.

And that they did, matching their opponents for 90 minutes.

Their battling display surely deserved a replay.

Alas, this is the Vase, and the game went to extra-time, where the hosts scored twice to settle the tie and leave us to ponder what might have been.

Not in the sense of having let ourselves down, but what might have been had small margins on the day fallen in our favour.

Had the tie gone to a replay with the scores level at 90 minutes, I know the boys would have been confident of winning the tie back at the Bowl.

That they were not afforded that opportunity is disappointing to say the least.

But those are the rules of the Vase and have always been such, so we have no real grounds for complaint.

It was still another step forward for the club and another proud day to be a Seasider.

The weekend had started well for both our reserve and under-21 sides, who both recorded victories on Saturday.

The reserves won a nine-goal thriller at Tiptree Jobserve, with a certain D Coyle scoring twice, while the under-21s stayed top of their league with a 1-0 win over Dagenham United.

This Saturday sees the first team back at the Bowl for the visit of Haverhill Rovers and it would be great to see you there.

Come on you Seasiders!
