CLACTON Golf Club lady captain Julia Hewett welcomed players for the team pink ball stableford competition.

The winners were vice-captain Gilly Cullen, Mary Cole and Marilyn Bates, with a fantastic score of 120 points.

In second were Lorna Forder, Janet Smith and Kath Sinnott, with 107 points, and in third were Pat Messenger, Lin Euston and Chris Gibbard, with 106.

Meanwhile, Clacton members competed in the first round of the 2015-16 winter top dogs event on Sunday morning.

The first round was best ball medal and the winners were Ben Usedon and Brady Diplock, with a nett score of 61 from their nine handicap.

In second place were Clayton Jeffrey and Mark Chamberlain, with a nett 62 from their six handicap, on countback from third-placed Andy Hobbs and Garry Roberts, also with a nett 62 from their seven handicap.

In fourth place were Adam Powell and Cliff Cullen, with 63 from their nine handicap.

Clacton’s seniors’ section played the first round of their winter top dogs competition and the winners were Bill Highstead and Mick Curwood, with 44 points.

In second place were Laurie Farrugia and Dave Gilbert, with 43 points, and in third were Malcolm Pitcher and Bob Seggie, with 42.

Clacton played the last Midweek Medal of 2015 and the winner, returning a score of 76-11-65 was Wayne Mardle.

In second was Brian Stringer, with 86-18-68, and in third was Chris Morgan, with 79-10-69.

In fourth place was Barry Pringle, with 90-20-70.

Clacton members were saddened following the death of honorary life member Betty Vertigen.

Mrs Vertigen joined the club in 1960 and had been a member for 55 years.

In that time she was lady captain three times in 1968, 1970 and 1986 and had won the Davall Bowl, Barton Trophy, Butler Cup and the Foursomes Trophy on more than one occasion.
