CLACTON-ON-SEA Golf Club’s Lady Captain Julia Hewett welcomed the club’s Past Lady Captains for the annual Lady Captains Past & Present Trophy.

Hewett said: “It was so good to see Edna Giles, Mary Strutt, Val Clarke, Sally Davies and Penny Merrill, what wonderful blasts from the past.

“The sun was shining and the course looked beautiful, how lucky we are to have these lovely days.”

Denise Pink won the trophy with 36 stableford points, in second place was Di Kedge with 31 and in third place was Mary Strutt with 28.

Clacton’s men played for the Portnoi Cup on Sunday morning.

The cup was presented to the club in 1927 by J Portnoi Esq, a prominent local dignitary and a member of Clacton’s Southcliff Lodge.

Competing against 107 other members, the 2015 winner was Craig James with 40 stableford points from his handicap of five.

In second place was Tony Chandler with 39, from his handicap of 8, on countback from third placed Ryan Weeks, from his handicap of 14, on countback from vice-captain Nick Smith also with 39 points, from his handicap of 18, in fourth.

The Junior section played for the Hedley Shield on a bright Saturday morning.

The winner was Max Smith with 34 stableford points, in second place was Katy Yates with 29 and junior captain Josh Bethell was third on 28.

Seniors’ vice-captain Tony Burnside, welcomed captain Norman Stechman and his team from The Essex, for this year’s annual match.

In the first match, vice-captain Tony Burnside and Doug Nichols got a half, Robert Gillespie and Mick Curwood lost one down, Bill Highstead and John Fisher won 2&1, Robin Routh and Laurie Farrugia won 4&2, Ray Crossfield and Derek Woodrow halved, Peter Wiggins and John Wacker lost 1 down, John Kemp and Bill Clarke halved and in the last match Brian Viercant and Alfie Smith won 2&1.

After lunch, past club captain Robert Gillespie was presented with a certificate, to mark his second Hole in One archived at Clacton’s 164-yard par three fifth hole; this feet was made doubly difficult, as the flag was tucked behind a bunker.

The nearest the pin on the 17th hole was won by Ray Crossfield and Clacton won the match 4½-3½.
