JACK Clampin says FC Clacton have a point to prove in Saturday’s trip to Thetford Town.

Both teams struggled in the Thurlow Nunn League premier division last term, with the Norfolk side finishing 14th and Clacton 16th.

This season, the Seasiders have made a solid start and sit ninth, while Thetford are win-less and second-from-bottom after Tuesday’s 0-0 draw at home to Mildenhall.

Now Clampin believes that in order to show their improvement and superiority, his team need to pick up maximum points at Mundford Road.

“We’re expecting a physical challenge, but want to go there and get three points,” said the midfielder, who rejoined Clacton in the summer after leaving for Stanway Rovers last November.

“We believe we can go there and win and feel we can become a top-12 side.

“Now we’ve got to prove that to everyone, especially our fans, by winning games like this and grinding out more victories. Thetford and ourselves were down there in the table last season, but if we can go there and pick up a result it’ll show the improvement we’ve made.”

Clacton suffered a blow after losing 1-0 at home to Newmarket on Saturday.

They had plenty of possession, especially after the break, but did not have the nous to penetrate a well-organised defence.

“We got on top in the second half but couldn’t break them down or get behind them,” said Clampin.

“It didn’t quite work out but we can still take positives from the game. Newmarket came here last season and beat us with ten men. They were on top for the whole match.

“This time, we really gave them a game and they’ll be a top-six side.

“Overall, we’ve had a pretty solid start and, on a personal level, I’m enjoying my football and pleased to be getting some game-time.

“I didn’t really play much last season at Stanway.

“It’s good to be back here playing with the boys and getting loads of minutes. I feel I’m improving and, as a team, we’re getting there and trying to play the right way.”

Clacton are at home to Brantham Athletic on Tuesday night (kick-off 7.45pm).

“We know we can beat them because we went to their place earlier in the season and won 1-0,” said Clampin.

“We want to take the game to them, as the home team, and hopefully pick up another three points.”
