CLACTON lady captain Julia Hewett welcomed counterpart Linda Burrows and her team from Harwich and Dovercourt Golf Club for the home leg of this year’s Barton-Smith Trophy.

The visitors proved strong opposition but, after lunch, it was announced that Clacton had won the 2015 matches 8-6.

Elsewhere, Clacton’s Essex under-16 captain Ben Rendell won three out of four points in the recent tri-county match with Kent and Surrey.

Rendell has been a junior member at the club for eight years, having been trained by the club’s professional staff.

Since then he has progressed into a very talented young golfer with a handicap of two.

Clacton’s men played for the Canny Ryall Cup and the winner was Alan Hearn, who returned 42 stableford points from his 13 handicap.

His reward is a handicap cut to 11.

In second was Jonathan Hewett, with 40 points and a new handicap of plus three, on countback from third-placed Brady Diplock, also with 40 points and a handicap cut to 12.

Clacton’s ladies played their Carrington Cup match and the winner was Steph Smith, with 33 points.

In second was Jacky Bright, with 32, and in third was Maxine Baker, with 30, on countback from fourth-place Chris Crossfield.

Clacton’s seniors team travelled to Ipswich Golf Club for the away leg of their 2015 match.

Having won by five matches to three at home in June, anticipation was high among the Clacton team.

Results: Clacton captain Joe Middleton and Derek Woodrow won four and two against Ipswich captain Maurice Barnes and Bob Bennett, Ken Hilton and Robert Gillespie halved with John Alcock and Phil Vince, John Willson and Bill Highstead lost two and one to Paul Gowen and Chris Lee, Ray Fage and Doug Nichols halved with Richard Watson and Allan Williams, vice-captain Tony Burnside and Norman Borstal won three and two against David Bailey and Robin Morley, Mick Curwood and Laurie Farrugia won four and three against Paul Garden and Roy Rogers, Bill Clarke and Brian Viercant won four and two against Michael Smy and Brian Williams and Peter Wiggins and Malcolm Taylor halved with Vic Carey and Colin Potten.

After lunch, Ipswich captain Barnes congratulated Clacton on a fine 5½-2½ win.

Clacton’s seniors played a three-man Texas scramble on a very wet Monday morning.

The winners, with a gross score of 69, nett 57, were Trevor Bright, Tony Fisher and Ben Caroll.

In second were Robin Routh, Derek Woodrow and John O’Regan with 68, nett 58, on countback from third-placed Bob Black, Peter Stephens and Chris Connell, with 71, nett 58.

Clacton lady member Denise Pink travelled to Braintree Golf Club to play her Essex Ladies’ Golf Union gold knockout semi-final against Braintree lady captain Toni Brockwell.

Pink played well on the front nine holes and was one-up at the turn.

However, home advantage told on the undulating back nine and the handshake came on the 15th green.
