CLACTON’S Tilly Thomas maintained her flying form at the England Schools Championships, in Gateshead.

The former St Clare’s Primary School pupil was selected after winning the 400 metres event at the East Anglian Championships.

She then rose to the occasion at the schools championships, making it through the under-19 heats and coming seventh in the finals, recording a time of 58m 4s.

It was quite an achievement, considering this is her first year in the 400m.

“Her coaches are very happy with her and, providing she continues her hard work and remains injury free,Tilly has a promising future,” said dad Tim.

Thomas, 17, is studying for her A levels at Ipswich Girls’ High School and runs for Ipswich Harriers.

She also trains three times a week at Clacton’s Gallery gym. Thomas will now compete in the senior girls’ under-20s and her goal is to be on the podium for England schools next year, with a view to being selected by Team GB for the Europian Junior Championships.
