A JUBILANT primary school have ended their wait for a coveted piece of football silverware.

Walton’s Hamford Primary Academy have won the Clacton District Primary Schools’ Football Cup competition for the first time in 15 years.

Their boys’ football team have lost just two games all year, finishing second in the school’s league.

However, it was in the cup that they were able to win some silverware to go into a trophy cabinet that is getting fuller by the term.

“I’m fantastically proud of the football team and their achievement,” said principal Benedick Ashmore-Short.

“Having been at the game, in the wind and driving rain, it was an absolute delight to see their passion, talent and resilience on show.

“Sport is a large part of life at Hamford and this result is a positive demonstration of the pupils’ hard work in training and practice.”

In the final they travelled to Alton Park Junior School, in Clacton, to face Holland Park.

They were the last two teams left from the 20 that began the quest for glory back in September.

Hamford started brightly, going into the lead early on.

Holland Park equalised in the second half and, with the score level, the match went into extra-time.

Hamford’s winning goal then followed in the last ten minutes – sparking celebrations for the Walton school.

Hamford’s sport development officer, Lea Turnbull, said: “I’m really pleased for them to get what they deserved.

“It is something to show for their ability, determination and team work – in the final as well as throughout the competition.

“We’ve been lucky to have so many good footballers in year six this year and I’m immensely proud of all of them.

“It’s just reward for the progress they’ve made on the sports field, to reflect the achievements being seen in the classroom in recent years.”
