MYLES Ashforth struck gold in the London Leon Paul Junior Series Epee competition, at Hendon.

Competing in the under-13 boys’ category, the Kirby-le-Soken schoolboy had a good set of poules, winning five of his six fights.

This placed him third in the rankings.

Colchester and District Fencing Club member Ashforth then had a bye in the first round of direct eliminations, followed by a match against 19th seed Zachery Jackson.

Jackson took an early lead but Ashforth turned the match around to secure a 10-6 win.

In the next round, Tendring Technology College student Ashforth met sixth seed Oscar May.

Fencing confidently, he had a comfortable 10-4 win.

In the semi-final, Ashforth’s opponent was second seed Jacob Foulsham.

Foulsham took an early lead and managed to increase his advantage to get three points ahead.

However, Ashforth kept his cool and, fencing steadily, levelled the match.

Then, with only ten seconds left, he made his attack and took the lead.

Foulsham desperately tried to score in the final seconds but Ashforth parried his attacks and secured the match 8-7.

In the final, Ashforth faced 16th seed Nicolas Grimshaw.

Ashforth took control from the start and slowly increased his lead.

Grimshaw managed to score two points by the end of the second period, but Ashforth only conceded one more point and won 9-3.
