WALTON Indoor Bowls Club’s men have made history by reaching a county final for the first time.

They did it in the over-60s double fours, with a victory over the Turpins club, from Saffron Walden.

The quartet of Keith Twinn, Dave Nichols, Clive Silverton and Bernard Brindley saw off their opposition, 21-13.

And although the other four of Don Anderson, Brian Avent, Roy Norton and Derek Chase went down 24-20, the overall score saw Walton through 41-37.

It was a remarkable achievement for a small club and followed success against Clacton and Chigwell in earlier rounds.

The match was played at the Falcon Club, in Chelmsford, and that is where the final will be staged on April 12.

Walton will face either Essex County or Ilford, who meet in the other semi-final today.

On the club front, Walton had two matches over the weekend and won them both.

First to visit the Columbine Centre were Severalls, who made a real fight of it before going down 90-70.

Results (Walton first): L Boxall, V Newby, J Wood, B Harding 20-19; P Newby, R Wood, E Marshall, G Druce 27-18; H Marshall, M Smith, A Rawling, G Hadley 24-17; C Chinn, A Smith, B Webb, C Silverton 19-16.

They were followed by Paxmans, for what proved a sad occasion.

Always popular visitors to Walton, this was the last match the club will ever play.

Paxmans, in existence for 103 years, have been forced to call it a day because their green at Castle Park has been closed down, leaving them with nowhere to play.

They were well in the picture until the halfway stage in this match.

But it went against them in the later stages and they were beaten 116-58.

Results (Walton first): R Talbot, A Cargill, B Webb, L Boddy 23-19; L Boxall, J Rayner, E Marshall, S Steggles 29-8; H Marshall, E Boddy, A McIntosh, R Norton 36-17; J Steggles, B Greeno, B Flaxman, B Harding 28-14.
