WITH more frosts this week, the sea temperatures have certainly dropped.

However, it hasn’t made any difference to the feeding codling.

Boats, beaches and piers are seeing slightly bigger fish, but still nowhere near double figures.

Once again, Clacton Boat Club members were out and Dave Hollands and Rocky Rochelle reported a good haul of codling in the 2lb to 5lb range, plus one 8lb thornback ray.

John Sherry also came ashore with codling in the 3lb class and most other boats returned with similar catches.

Lawrence Chisnall and Phil Winger also headed out to sea and caught 20 sizable codling, all to squid baits.

The Holland and Clacton seafronts have been fishing extremely well, with off-shore westerly winds helping anglers to cast that bit further.

Young Clacton angler Nat Mills fished an evening tide with his father on the Holland beaches.

He had a catch of whiting and also managed to land a bonus 3lb codling.

The weekend saw lots of anglers fishing on the seafront and most reported fewer whiting, but the codling were certainly feeding well.

My trip this week was to the Hazelmere Road area at Holland.

I fished a day-time ebb-tide in sunny conditions.

The codling were feeding and I ended the session with eight plump codling.

All my fish were caught on squid baits.

Clacton Pier has still seen an influx of codling.

The night tides are fishing better here, although weed has been a problem when the tide is running hard.

Walton Pier has to be the hotspot this week, with codling showing well in rougher conditions.

John Morrisey fished here and returned with a good catch of better-than-average size fish.

Colchester anglers Joe McDonald and John Holloway fished the top of the pier and caught codling and whiting.

He also reported other anglers catching similar weights of fish.

Most of the Walton and Frinton beaches are seeing codling being caught.

This has to be the best codling season we’ve seen for many a year and it looks like it will now continue right through to the spring.

The tides for the weekend are 2.43pm on Saturday and 3.19pm on Sunday.
