FRINTON Cricket Club skipper Mark Jones believes his side can give themselves a major psychological boost this weekend.

The coastal side are gearing up for a crunch match against Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship title rivals Sudbury.

The division one pace-setters will meet at Ashlyns Road on Saturday, starting at 1pm.

And although quick to stress that the championship will not be won or lost this weekend, Jones knows the significance of this eye-catching fixture.

“It’s a very big game and whoever wins will set themselves up nicely for the second half of the season,” said the Frinton captain, whose side are second in division one, breathing down the necks of their Suffolk visitors.

“Mentally, that would be a big boost and it would certainly be nice to win.

“Whoever wins isn’t necessarily going to win the league, because it’s so close at the top.

“I don’t see it as a two-horse race and would still factor in sides like Wivenhoe, Mistley and Coggeshall. But if we could beat them it would signal our ambitions about retaining the title.

“We know it’s going to be tight and they’re a good side with good players.

“But we’re starting to click.

“The wickets are getting better and better, which is helping our batsmen, and we’re going well.

“We’ve just got to make sure we perform on Saturday.”
