Wales on target as Seasiders pipped by title-chasing Gorleston; Regent win at Walsham
FC CLACTON put up a brave fight but lost 2-1 at home to title-chasing Gorleston, in Saturday’s Thurlow Nunn League premier division contest at the Rush Green Bowl.
Tom Holdstock went straight into their starting line-up, having joined on loan from Heybridge Swifts, while Stanway loanee Jake Plane made his home debut for the Seasiders.
Gorleston scored either side of half-time but Billy Wales gave Clacton hope, pulling one back on 63 minutes.
He picked the ball up with his back to goal, turned and fired a low, left-footed effort into the bottom corner.
Wales then had an effort blocked on the line but the hosts were unable to snatch a dramatic leveller.
Elsewhere, fourth-placed BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT were also victorious, running out 3-1 winners at Walsham-le-Willows.
Kevin Coyle put them in front within ten minutes and then, after soaking up a spell of pressure, Regent added their second when Ricky Griggs drilled home from 15 yards.
Brightlingsea went close again when Coyle’s header was well-saved by Walsham’s keeper.
But from the ensuing corner, Phil Kelly’s goal-bound header was turned in by Scott Yearling.
Walsham pulled one back in the closing stages.
