Seasiders retain title after Chelmsford victory
CLACTON retained the Essex League championship after a 12-6 success against Chelmsford.
They went into the match expecting a tough night, with a number of key players absent and up against opposition in second spot.
Chelmsford have strengthened their side, with the addition of National League premier division player Sam Abbott.
The Seasiders knew that providing they could contain him, they would secure the necessary points to secure the title.
Captain James Fry set up his team with exactly the right strategy, with Ian and Adrian Westlake double-marking Abbott.
This allowed Robert Eastman to break forward and score three times in quick succession.
With another strike by Ian Westlake, the first quarter ended 4-0 to the Seasiders. Defending the deep end in the second quarter, the Seasiders kept things very tight, restricting Chelmsford to a single goal, and at half-time they led 4-1. The third period saw Clacton again turn on the style, with goals from Adrian and Ian Westlake and from their dad, Nick.
The match was over as a contest, with the Seasiders leading 9-1 at the end of the third quarter.
With the game already won, they eased off the pressure on Abbott and he showed some classy finishing to make the score-line respectable with four goals, as the contest finished 12-6.
