Foakes' progress is praised by Grayson

FRINTON Cricket Club star Ben Foakes can be proud of the progress he has made this year.
That is the view of Essex County Cricket Club coach Paul Grayson, following the young wicket-keeper’s performance in 2013.
Foakes, who lives in Kirby-le-Soken, has been named in England’s Performance Programme (EPP) squad to travel to Australia this winter.
The 20-year-old has shone in the field for Essex this season especially at short-leg, making some important catches throughout the campaign.
Foakes, who fielded for England during this summer’s Ashes Series, scooped Essex’s Fielder of the Year award for 2013.
And now he has been named in the EPP squad, along with Essex team-mates Reece Topley and Tymal Mills.
Grayson said: “All three are outstanding young cricketers who have all come through our system.
“I think that we should be very proud of them at the club and they all deserve their call-ups.
“In being in Australia for a month, they’ll be in the right place with the Ashes taking place there and who knows what might happen?
“They’ve experienced first-class cricket for a number of years now and all of them have done very well.”
Foakes, who this week has been playing in Essex’s final LV County Championship division two game of the season at Hampshire, will travel Down Under this winter.
He will spend a period training at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough with the EPP.
Foakes will then follow it up with a month in Australia where the squad will be based in Brisbane for a fortnight, followed by two weeks in Perth.
