JENNY Lawson and Brenda Stanley have capped a memorable season for buoyant Thorpe Bowls Club.

The duo had cause to celebrate after the remarkable achievement of winning the county unbadged pairs competition.

They beat their counterparts from Drums Bowls Club 21-12, after their opponents conceded at 20 ends in the final at Falcon.

It means that after two colt games next season, Lawson and Stanley should gain their county badges.

It would be the first time two ladies from the club have received county badges in the same year.

Thorpe’s ladies are renowned for being county bowlers and, at one time, they had 11 badged players out of their membership of 33.

Lawson and Stanley’s success provided the highlight of the season, but there were plenty of other successes during one of the club’s best years in recent memory.

Lawson and Pat Thornton won the Tendring Hundred League pairs, while Thorpe reached the quarter-finals of the Albert Crabb competition.

In the club’s championship singles, Thornton beat Jean Ruddock.

And in the handicap competition, Thornton beat Jo Patterson.

In the pairs, Lyn Bott and Vicki Smith beat Mary Diggle and Jean Willoughby and in the triples Joe Warrener, Patterson and Sheila Sims beat Diggle, Bee Williams and Carole Oakley. In the two-wood singles, Oakley beat Warrener.

In the jubliee triples, Oakley, Jean Ruddock and Maureen Kettle beat Thornton, Willoughby and Warrener.

Oakley and Maureen Smith beat Sue Ramsbottom and Sims, in the fixed jack.

In the round-robin, the winner was Alison Barr and the runner-up Vicki Smith.

The season finished with the club’s award presentations and closing supper, held at the weekend.
