Kestrels are defeated at Thetford
8:00pm Thursday 19th September 2013 in Sport
CLACTON Rugby Club’s Kestrels played a friendly at Thetford, losing 47-12.
They had been hoping to start their Suffolk Merit League campaign but were left without a fixture after a late cancellation by Haverhill.
Thetford’s second team therefore provided the opposition for the first outing of the year.
Clacton travelled with the bare minimum 15 players, to take on a talented development squad.
They started brightly and a chip over the top was pounced on by James Garrod.
He fell metres short of the line but offloaded to Mikey Hazel, who scored the first points of the season.
Tries then came quickly for Thetford, up to half-time and into the second period.
Clacton rallied and another good run from Garrod again saw him fall short of the line – only for Daniel Land to pick up and score from close range – and the final score was 47-12 to Thetford.
The Kestrels have another home game scheduled for this Saturday, when Mersea Island Rhinos provide the opposition.
Kick-off at Vista Road is 3pm.
