Triathlon attracts top athletes

ATHLETES from across the country and abroad will descend on Clacton at the weekend.
The 15th Clacton Triathlon Weekend will be held on Saturday and Sunday at the Holland Haven Country Park, comprising various British Triathlon Eastern Region League and Championship races.
The racing starts at 10am on the Saturday with a Sprint Cross Triathlon with almost 100 individual athletes and teams taking part in the race, which includes a 750 metre sea swim, a 16km off-road bike and a 5km run between the Haven and the Kingscliff Hotel and back.
This year there is a record entry for the children’s Duathlon races that start from 2pm on Saturday.
The Clacton Olympic Distance Triathlon on Sunday has been nominated as the Eastern Region Championship event for 2013 with over 260 competitors racing in the main event of the weekend.
There will be multiple wave starts from 8.45am for the 1.5km swim from a beach along the sea wall between Holland and Frinton.
This is followed by a 40km bike section through Great Holland, Kirby Cross, Thorpe le Soken and Sladburys Lane.
The final section is a 10km run along Clacton seafront to the pier and back to Holland Haven to finish.
Competitors come from all parts of the UK and from abroad.
Clacton Triathlon Club was formed in 1999 solely for raising money for the Brain and Spine Foundation.
The organisers are committed to increasing the funding of £63,000 donated to date with another large donation this year.
The club is unable to run the Triathlon Weekend without the assistance of numerous marshals.
