Mahoney: we can beat dreaded drop

CLACTON Rugby Club coach Matt Mahoney insists his side still have a “strong chance” of avoiding relegation this season.

The Seasiders are third-from-bottom in Essex League division one, ahead of a tough home date with Campion on Saturday.

The Romford-based visitors are top of the table with a 100 per cent record and will start as red-hot favourites at Vista Road.

Nevertheless, Mahoney is confident his side can spring a surprise and then go on to secure their division one status by winning two of their next three games, against basement boys Burnham-on-Crouch, Billericay and Upper Clapton.

“It’s going to be a real test but we’re capable of beating anyone on our day and I believe we’ve got a real chance on Saturday,” said Mahoney.

“We’re not a bad side – not as bad as our league position suggests – and we’ve got a strong chance of staying up."
