THE battle for high placings went to the wire in the Clacton Singles Darts League.
Gavin Payne landed the championship title some months back, but the contest beneath him stayed alive until the bitter end.
Bill Root just needed to match or beat Chris Hemingway’s result to remain second.
Hemingway faced Rob Seal, who put up a spirited performance, but the former limped over the line with an 8-5 win.
Root was left needing to win 8-5 or better against a revitalised Mark Tuck.
He went 7-5 up and was poised to clinch the crucial leg.
The players were neck-and-neck throughout, with both players making several agonising trips to the oche, wiring their required double dart after dart.
However, it was Tuck who came up trumps, handing the runner-up position to Hemingway, although Root
