Richie making progress in his quest to turn pro
4:36pm Thursday 25th October 2012 in Sport By Matt Plummer
BRIGHTLINGSEA’S Richie Robins is a step closer to winning a professional playing contract with League One Swindon Town or Leyton Orient.
More than 5,000 players from all over the country entered Samsung’s Win A Pro Contract – and the goalkeeper is now through to the quarter-final stage.
Robins (pictured) is one of 88 players remaining after impressing scouts at regional trials.
The 19-year-old will now play in an 11-a-side match at Staines Town on Sunday, November 4.
“I’m really excited to have made it through to the next round,” said Robins, who plays for Wivenhoe Town.
“Hopefully the coaches will give me a chance to show them what I can do.
“Last year I dislocated my finger the day before the quarter-final stage, which as a goalkeeper really ruins your chances to play.
“I’ve been working hard in the gym, focusing on my technical abilities and also doing a lot of cardio to keep up my fitness levels.”
The 88 players are battling it out to be among the 11 players selected for the final in December.
