Singing it aloud for gospel night
6:30pm Friday 22nd June 2012 in Sound Check By Neil D'Arcy-Jones
Infectious – Quire’s concert is at the end of the month
THERE is something incredibly infectious about gospel music.
Just watching members of Colchester’s world community singing group, Quire, sing such numbers as Oh Happy Day and Down By the Riverside, your toes start to tap and your whole body begins to sway to the music.
You also smile – a lot. That’s what audiences can expect when the group take to the stage at St Teresa’s Church, in Clairmont Road, Colchester, for a special gospel-inspired concert.
There, Quire will be celebrating the work of Thomas Dorsey, Mahalia Jackson, Yolanda Adam and many others who have made gospel the musical force it is today. Set up by Professor Bill Tamblyn, former head of music at Colchester Institute, from just 12 singers, Quire’s popularity has grown.
In just over a year, he had more than 40 regularly turning up for rehearsals.
