IT’S known for its diverse musical focus and now the Railway Hotel, in Southend, is gearing up to host a regular jazz night.

It starts tonight with a set from local jazz quintet, Interplay.

The modern outfit will set the tone for the popular pub’s foray into jazz with its new regular Wednesday sessions.

Interplay’s set will feature some of the great hard-bop tunes of the Blue Note era, old fashioned jazz standards and a selection of tunes by the best British artists.

The quintet feature the talents of clarinettist John Seeley, saxophonist Tony Pethen, bassist Martin Gibbons, guitarist Dave Warren and drummer Richard Dray. With jazz nights in Leigh already heavily attended throughout the week, the Railway venture is likely to pull in the punters, so get there early to get settled down for some top music.

The session at the venue in Clifftown Road, Southend, starts at 9pm.

Entry is free. For details call: 01268 781700 or e-mail tpethen@yahoo. co.uk
